What is a VPN?
The short version.

Your IP address identifies you

All people on the internet have an IP address linked to them. It’s allocated by the internet service provider and makes the internet work. But it also means you carry a digital ID card that can be used to map your life online.

Your ISP registers what you do online

Your internet service provider (ISP) can log all the websites you visit. In many countries they are forced to do this by law. In several cases they do not only share this information with authorities without suspicion, but also sell the data.

Using a VPN makes it harder to monitor you

When you use a VPN, your traffic is encrypted and sent to a VPN server before it travels on to the site you want to visit. This means your ISP can’t see which sites you visit, and that third-party actors can’t use your IP address to identify you.

Use a VPN to circumvent censorship

Many states censor the internet and forbid their people to see a particular type of content. When you use a VPN you can change your geographical location and circumvent censorship – to access an internet with the freedom of information.
