• Chat Control & Going Dark: de oorlog tegen versleuteling neemt toe. Door een schimmige samenwerking tussen de VS en de EU.

  Na het klokkenluiden van Snowden in 2013 werden grote delen van het internet versleuteld, waardoor veilige privécommunicatie mogelijk werd. Niet iedereen was blij met deze verandering. Met name de FBI en andere Amerikaanse overheidsinstanties hebben gevochten in wat vaak de 'crypto-oorlogen' wordt genoemd, de oorlog tegen encryptie. De afgelopen jaren heeft de Europese Commissie zich bij hen gevoegd. Onder het motto "En de kinderen dan?" proberen ze totale massasurveillance van alle EU-burgers in te voeren; eerst via de voorgestelde Chat Control-wetgeving en later via de Going Dark- en ProtectEU-initiatieven. Het doel is om spionagetools wettelijk verplicht te stellen op elke Europese smartphone en computer.   The most common argument used in defense of mass surveillance is ‘If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear’. Try saying that to women in the US states where abortion has suddenly become illegal. Say it to investigative journalists in authoritarian countries. Saying ‘I have nothing to hide’ means you stop caring about anyone fighting for their freedom. And one day, you might be one of them.
