Après les révélations de Snowden en 2013, une grande partie d'Internet est devenue chiffrée, permettant des communications privées et sécurisées. Ce changement n'a pas fait l'unanimité. Notamment, le FBI et d'autres agences gouvernementales américaines ont mené ce que l'on appelle souvent la « guerre du chiffrement ». Ces dernières années, la Commission européenne s'est jointe à eux. Sous le slogan « Et les enfants ? », elle tente d'instaurer une surveillance de masse totale de tous les citoyens européens, d'abord par le biais du projet de loi sur le contrôle des conversations, puis via les initiatives Going Dark et ProtectEU. L'objectif est d'imposer légalement des outils d'espionnage sur tous les smartphones et ordinateurs européens. Les véritables instigateurs de ces efforts sont les entreprises technologiques et les services de renseignement américains.

The most common argument used in defense of mass surveillance is ‘If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear’. Try saying that to women in the US states where abortion has suddenly become illegal. Say it to investigative journalists in authoritarian countries. Saying ‘I have nothing to hide’ means you stop caring about anyone fighting for their freedom. And one day, you might be one of them.
